ABOUT MESSAGE & METHOD

Public speaking is more than performance—so is learning how to do it well.

Most people are expected to speak long before anyone teaches them how.

Message & Method was created for professionals who are regularly asked to present, explain, persuade, lead, teach, or represent their expertise—but who were never given a complete system for doing it.

Much of what passes for public-speaking instruction begins with what an audience can see: eye contact, gestures, posture, vocal variety, and stage presence. Those things matter, but they are only one part of speaking well.

Your internal experience matters. Your understanding of the audience matters. The way you select, structure, and clarify your ideas matters. Preparation, technology, environment, interaction, and reflection all matter.

Message & Method brings those elements together so that improvement is not limited to collecting presentation tips. You develop a more deliberate way to think about speaking—and a process you can continue using after the program ends.

ABOUT PETER CUMBO

A career spent shaping messages—and helping people deliver them.

I first stepped onto a professional stage at twelve years old. Since then, communication has shaped nearly every chapter of my career.

Over the past three decades, I’ve worked as a presenter, performer, trainer, coach, creative consultant, producer, and director. I’ve coached thousands of professionals, executives, educators, and students, designed training in communication, leadership, and creativity, and directed speakers and performers for live and recorded media.

Working as a director and editor changed the way I think about communication. You start with an intention, but an audience never experiences that intention directly. They experience the choices you make to express it—what you show, what you leave out, where you direct attention, and how the experience unfolds.

Directing taught me to see communication as the process of translating intention into experience. Every conceptual, practical, and technical decision either helps that intention land—or gets in its way.

Years of coaching revealed something else. Many people assume becoming a better public speaker means becoming a better performer: sounding more polished, projecting confidence, using bigger gestures, or learning how to behave differently in front of a room. For people who have little interest in performing, improvement can start to feel like becoming someone they don’t want to be.

Speaking and performance do share important skills. Strong delivery can make a message clearer, more engaging, and more memorable. I came from performance myself.

But effective speaking goes much deeper.

You can learn plenty of useful techniques for voice, posture, gestures, and stage presence and still struggle to put them together when you’re actually in front of an audience. The biggest improvements I saw came from working further beneath the surface: understanding yourself as a communicator, reading an audience, deciding what change you want to create, shaping a message around that objective, and then using delivery to help it land.

That thinking became the foundation of Message & Method.

I built the program to bring together what I learned from speaking, performance, coaching, directing, producing, and training into one integrated approach. Delivery matters enormously—but it has something to serve. The goal is to develop the awareness, judgment, preparation, and practical skills that make effective communication possible across different audiences, messages, and situations.

I don’t want to teach people to perform a version of “a good speaker.” I want to help them become more deliberate, capable, and effective versions of themselves.
